Distinguished and Famous people from Korumburra
🤝 Sir Stanley Savige
Stanley Savige attended Korumburra State School, leaving at twelve to work as a blacksmith’s striker. His early employment bears little resemblance to the senior army command with which his name later became associated. He served at Gallipoli and in subsequent campaigns, and became a founder of Legacy, supporting the families of deceased servicemen. Korumburra belongs to his childhood and working beginnings; his birthplace was Morwell. Keeping those places distinct preserves a more interesting biography than simply assigning all his achievements to one town.
🌟 Frank Bladin
Air Vice-Marshal Frank Bladin was born in Korumburra in 1898. He entered the Royal Military College at Duntroon in 1917 and transferred from the army to the Royal Australian Air Force in 1923, joining its early generation of trained pilots. During the Second World War, his responsibilities included air defence across the Northern Territory, north-western Australia and Torres Strait. His professional life took him far from South Gippsland, but the Korumburra birthplace is recorded in the historical account of the Laverton street named for him. It is a direct biographical connection to a significant military aviation career.
